Statement of intent
My aim is to produce a website of my very own work clearly showing my ideas around conflict. At the end of my assessment, I will upload my best photos and display them so they can be viewed.
At the start of my research I will find a suitable photographer, currently, I have three in my mind Don McCullin, Nick Fitzhugh and Larry Burrows.
I chose Don McCullin as he's a big conflict photographer showing his pride in the photos he takes making me inspired.
When I chose the theme conflicts the first idea what snapped in my head was war, violence and blood with an end outcome of innocent lives being destroyed.
To show my advancement throughout my work I'm going to photograph the basic domestic violence by setting up a scene of violence.
I would love to experiment with a wide range of techniques in my work I have a range of props such as blood to show more effect in my work.
I have eight weeks to complete my portfolio for my final piece. I aim to complete my research in the first week but two weeks max. I will have an eight-hour exam where I'll print my final photos.

How to analyse an image using the 5CS
- Context
A company called UNICEF founded on 11th December 1946, with their main headquarters in New York took this picture, they are a company what help children and adults in war-torn countries. They travel the world mainly trying to help children so they have a better life. Millions of children have been raised and born into this crisis. For example, a month old baby called Youssef is one of the 16 million children who has already been born into this catastrophe... Every two seconds a child is born into a war-torn country filled with pessimism only to carry on a and try to make the best of it.
- content
When I look at this picture I see three people, three people confused trying to figure out what's going to happen next as they are walking away from a shelter they have possibly been living in. There is a type of barn behind them, what they possibly use as a house, as a shelter so they can perform their daily tasks but with a struggle. Possibly because of the civil war what happened known as bloody Easter. The picture tells us a deep inside look of Yugoslavia. The war-torn country. The main content, in my opinion, is a family group which we can see by their faces are in conflict and crisis. By using a family group, UNICEF is drawing our attention to the innocent victims of the conflict in Yugoslavia. The red of the man's coat seems to stand out against the dull background creating contrast and a sight hint of danger. This powerful image, in my opinion, can reach out and touch us rather than showing the full horrors of war.
- Composition
- Connection
In this picture it shows us a group of possible refugees going to an alien world, they're carrying a load of luggage with them indicating they are in poverty the background shows a damn and an inhumane place letting out a message across the world of how rough it is. Although I'm not going to go to a war zone I still feel his picture could inspire my own work. From this image, I'm going to take the idea of possibly grouping together to create a focal point.I'm also going to use colour to show a contrast in my own images.

Posters that inspired me
All of these images are based on domestic violence...
Domestic violence is occurring everywhere around the world. the UK government stated "any incident of controlling, coercive, threatening behavior, violence or abuse between those aged 16 or over who are, or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality."
My plan for self harm and domestic violence shoot
First shoot.
My worst image...
I think this is my worst image because someone was in the way also because the focus wasn't right.
Second shoot
My Worst Picture
I think this is my worst picture as one of my friends feet are showing.
For all of these images, I like the facial especially for the one on the bottom left... For some people, this may not hit them at first but then it talks about your loved ones.
"1 in 4 women, your mother, your sister, your partner and your daughter" the photographer edited this photo to tell us our own mothers could have been domestically abused so it makes us realise how deep it is.
So for my own work, I'm going to do the same and add a helpline.

Evaluation
In this topic, I discuss Domestic violence and self harm what I've been exploring for a number of months. As its occurring all over the world I originally tried to break my work up into different segments making it easy for the viewer to go through my site. The reason why I chose this theme is because, that it's a growing problem globally, however, I took all of my images in Manchester as you need to start somewhere small and gradually expand out.
What part of the project?
during the project, I really enjoyed Photoshop as I advanced my skills by wielding different actions I have made. For example, the lighting took a big part in my work as it changed the atmosphere making the model brighter but the background fading away in darkness making a depressing mood appear as I got my ideas from posters found online which inspired me to speak out a message. I also enjoyed recreating acts and taking photos of someones arm with fake blood as I feel like I'm going to do something good with it, I loved how the spot light easily shown the audience what my target message is allowing my voice to be heard and thought about as a lot of time and effort went in to creating the most effective image possible.
What new techniques have I experienced?
During my project, a new technique I have used is shutter speed as it enhanced the way my photos appear giving it a perfect touch to see if it was too dark or light depending on how fast the shutter speed was allowing me to get a real grip with the camera making me more comfortable. Another good experience that I have learned is the experimentation with Photoshop as I have learned how to make a poster with an effective message behind it which can be broadcasted out the world.
What technique would you like to develop further?
In the next project, I would like to develop a deeper understanding of the topic that I chose by doing a little bit more research so I am 100% satisfied with my understanding and effort that I put into this project. In my opinion, I think I would go on YouTube to see how others felt and what they've been through. As well as this I would want to interview who went through all of this so that I can get a deeper understanding allowing me to manipulate images better, and show them in a more effective way to the people looking at the posters. Thirdly, I think that I would go to locations such as the underneath a bridge or a abandoned place so I can capture a ruined back ground and good light to express the photo in a deeper manner.
How have photographers influenced me?
By researching numeral photographers I who have covered the topic 'conflict' for there main work. I have learnt that not all images have to be a picture of violence to get the message across. Don McCullin the photographer I chose has done a lot of work that isn't violent. He inspired me to construct my work.
In conclusion, I feel as if my fist stepping stone to photography will help me develop my ideas more thoroughly as I have a few more projects as well as my exam coming up soon as I have learnt skills, facts and most importantly, how to operate a camera.
